How Petunia and Vernon Would've Acted Towards Harry If He Wasn't Magical

Postby favouriteghost » June 7th, 2018, 9:52 am

do we know enough about petunia evans and vernon dursley to confidently say how they would have treated harry had magic not been in the equation?

say, petunia and her sister lily did not get along, but lily was not a witch, she didn’t marry a wizard. she just married a guy named james, they had a son around the same age as petunia and vernon’s son, and then they died in a car crash (like the lie they told harry) and petunia and vernon were given custody of harry.

i’ve always understood that we’re meant to believe that vernon and petunia are so awful and abusive to harry because, a) they are both extremely anti-magic/anti-anything seen to be abnormal or strange, and b) in petunia’s case, an overwhelming envy and loathing of her sister that began in childhood

so, were that magical/abnormal element to be removed from the situation, would they have treated harry the same way? their favouritism of their own biological son seems like it would come through either way. dudley is clearly not a great kid/teenager, but he’s treated like a god by his parents. his personality didn’t affect the way they treated him at all. (if anything, their spoiling of him made him a worse person, but let’s not get into that right now)

if petunia and vernon had just had custody of harry after lily and james’ deaths, and magic was not a factor at all, how would they have treated harry throughout his childhood?

I guess that if this was the situation, everything would have been totally the same except for:
a.Harry would have got to know exactly how his parents died
b.He would have PROBABLY got a room to sleep in
c.He would get better Christmas presents:)

Anyway, who cares about a muggle?

Having no magic would have made Harry 'Normal' and that was all that mattered to the Dursley's, so i think they would have treated him the same as their own son.

It would have made boring reading though.
